Brand under review: REN Clean Skincare

For our first brand overview, we have chosen REN Clean Skincare - here we take a closer look at our top 5 products from the brand

Brand under review: REN Clean Skincare

This is our very first deep-dive into one of the brands we rate highly enough to include in our SkinLyst shortlist.

We love them for a few reasons:

1. Their attitude to sustainability. To give some examples, they recycle ocean plastic to use in their packaging, they were the first to market with completely-recyclable pumps (pumps usually contain metal springs making them non-recyclable as a multi-material item). They also support LOOP - currently US-only - which offers refillable household items, to reduce our overall packaging waste. AND £1 from every sale of their christmas sets is going to Plastic Patrol (which helps to remove plastic from the ocean)

2. Their attitude to natural formulation (although wish they had some fragrance-free lines)

But are all of their products great? Short answer: no (no brand really is). The rule of life, you get 80% of sales from 20% of your products. But REN do a pretty great job overall - we think they are particularly great at making moisturisers… are some of our favourites (plus their killer best-selling toner we couldn’t leave off the list!)

Bio-RetinoidTM Anti-Ageing Moisturiser

Harnessing the trendy new active, Bakuchiol (dubbed ‘nature’s retinol’), this moisturiser has great anti-ageing results, with none of the negative side effects commonly associated with retinol. So it’s great for those who don’t want to use retinol (or are advised not to, for example during pregnancy), or to supplement any retinol serum, to further enhance the anti-ageing effects without risking any irritation.

Best for: mature skin types, looking to target fine lines & firmness

How to: Use morning & night, after serums & before SPF

EvercalmTM Global Protection Cream

The brands EvercalmTM range is designed for those with more sensitive skin, and is one of their most cult ranges. This moisturiser is formulated to calm redness and reduce inflammation (helping to prevent premature ageing), as well as nourish and hydrate. Harnessing natural Omega-rich Blackcurrant Seed & Sea Buckthorn Oils, alongside replenishing Camellia Oil. I typically recommend this as a daily staple for those with more sensitive skin, or for those who are incorporating stronger actives into other stages of their skincare.

Best for: Dry-normal skin types, with reactive skin, or prone to redness

How to: Apply morning & evening, after serum & before SPF

Clarimatte T-Zone Balancing Gel

A great one for combination to oilier skin types, this lightweight gel-cream works to mattify the skin and control shine. It includes willowbark extract (containing naturally occurring salicylic acid to decongest), alongside oil-absorbing konjac root to control sebum production, and in turn reduce breakouts.

Best for: Combination-oily skin type, prone to shine & breakouts

How to: Apply morning & evening, after serum & before SPF

Glow Daily Vitamin C Gel Cream

Rated 4.8* across more than 100 reviews, this gel-creme is great for those looking to address skin radiance or pigmentation concerns. The formula contains Vitamin C (in the form of Ascorbyl Glucoside), to brighten & protect skin, and Tara Pod extract, which works in combination to even out skin tone. These two are supported by Magnesium, a natural mineral required for overall skin health.

Best for: combo-oily skin types with dull or uneven skin tone

Ready Steady Glow Daily AHA Tonic

Already a cult staple for beauty lovers and journalists alike, and a best-selling product for the brand. This resurfacing toner contains Lactic and Salicylic acid (in the form of willowbark extract) for gentle daily resurfacing action. Expect pores to be purged, breakouts reduced, and your skin to feel smooth, soft & glowing (who doesn’t want that?

Best for: combo/oily, congested or dull skin types

How to: Use each evening, after cleansing & before serum/moisturiser
